Persian rugs are completely handmade and each knot is tied around the warp threads by the weaver on a horizontal or vertical loom. Handmade rugs have several knots and may require from 2 weeks to 2 years for completion. The materials used are silk, cotton, wool or a mixture. The most popular traditional rugs are made in Iran (Persia), Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, China and Nepal. The lesser known rugs are prepared in Morocco, Eastern Europe, Egypt, Turkmenistan and Southern Russia.
